How Long Do Pantry Staples Really Last in Singapore?
How long pantry staples last depends on the product, the date on the pack and, especially once opened, how well they are stored. You will often hear that certain pantry foods “never expire,” but the reality is a little more nuanced, especially in Singapore’s heat and humidity.
What the dates actually mean
Most prepacked food carries either a "best before" or a "use by" date. According to the Singapore Food Agency, "use by" applies to highly perishable foods and relates to safety, while "best before" relates to quality, and is typically found on foods with a longer shelf life (Mothership, reporting SFA guidance).
Singapore's rules treat both marks as an expiry date for retail, meaning shops cannot sell food past either one (Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment). And And remember, a date is only one part of food safety. If something has been stored incorrectly or shows signs of spoilage, do not rely on the date alone. SFA notes that food can spoil even before its expiry date if it has not been stored properly.
That is why we will not tell you a food is "fine for years". What we can do is help you store it well.
Why humidity changes the picture
Singapore’s heat and humidity can be hard on dry pantry foods such as grains, granola, nuts, seeds and flour, particularly once the packaging has been opened.Once a pack is opened, the printed date no longer tells the whole story. Follow any “refrigerate after opening” or “consume within X days” instructions on the label, and pay attention to how the product is being stored.
What lasts, and what to watch
- Dried beans and lentils. Riyana Rupani, Everiday's founder, suggests keeping them airtight and using them within about six months, because older beans can stay hard however long you cook them (Guide to Legumes & Lentils).
- Cooking oils and fats. Her guide to cooking fats and oils is useful for choosing them. Store them away from heat and light, and follow the date on the bottle. Once opened, pay attention to changes in smell or flavor, which can be signs the oil has gone rancid.
- Granola, crackers and cookies. Check the date on each pack. Our granola snack packs come individually portioned, so you open only what you will eat. For larger bags of granola, reseal well after each use or transfer to an airtight container to help protect the texture in Singapore’s humidity.
- Sauces and chilli oils. Follow the label for storage once opened. [INSERT: Everiday guidance for opened chilli oils and sambal – confirm with production].
A simple storage system
- Reseal opened packs well or transfer them to airtight containers.
- Store them cool and dry, away from the stove, kettle and sunny windows.
- For foods you use slowly, write the opening date on the lid.
- Put new packs behind old ones, so the oldest gets used first.
- Give your pantry a quick check every few weeks.. Look for damp, clumping, an off smell, or any sign of pests, and dispose anything you are unsure about.
When should you throw it out?
Your senses can help you spot obvious spoilage, but they are not a substitute for safe storage and label instructions. Pay particular attention to “use by” dates on perishable foods. For pantry foods, also look for moisture, mold, pest activity, unusual odors, rancidity or damaged packaging. If a product is damp, moldy, smells rancid or unusual, has signs of pests, or the packaging is compromised, it is better to discard it.
