Four tests for a bag-and-drawer snack
- It travels. Sealed, crush-resistant, no mess.
- It keeps. It should hold up for days in a drawer or a bag.
- It satisfies. A snack with some protein, fat or fiber alongside carbohydrate is usually more satisfying than carbohydrate on its own.
- It is allowed. Some schools restrict nuts or other allergens. Check your school's rules before packing.
Crunchy and savoury

- Mini Rice Cakes are organic brown rice and a little pink Himalayan salt, and a good a simple base for cheese, seed butter or nut butter, depending on your school’s allergy policy.
- Sweet, without a sugar spike
- Our Chocolate Chip and Oatmeal Raisin cookies are made with natural sweeteners and are balanced with healty fats, and fiber to help prevent blood sugar spikes. . Note that the chocolate chip cookies are madewith almond butter, so they are not nut-free.
- Granola snack packs come pre-portioned, so there is no measuring at 7am.
A note on nuts. Some of our products contain nuts, and our facility handles nuts, eggs and sesame as well as being gluten-free. Always check the ingredient list and allergen information on the pack you are buying.
For the office drawer
The same four tests apply, but add one more: it must not need a fridge. Sealed rice cakes, puffs and granola packs all work. Add fruit or a boiled egg from the canteen and you have a proper mid-afternoon snack.
A make-ahead idea from Riyana
If you like to bake, or rather not bake, Riyana Rupani's Gluten-Free No Bake Granola Bars are built around dates, nut or seed butter, oats, seeds and a little honey, pressed into a tin and frozen until firm. She stores them in the fridge, wrapped individually in parchment paper so they are easy to grab. The recipe includes a nut-free version using a mix of seeds, which is handy for school.
For travel days, her go-to travel snacks list shows the same logic at work: portable, protein or fat alongside the carbs, and little prep.
